Planners’ initial focus (as the field was in its infancy roughly 100 years ago)
Planners’ initial focus (as the field was in its infancy roughly 100 years ago) was very much on buildings’ and neighborhoods’ design and use. Housing reformers and utopian planners responded to the reality of the industrial city by reimagining tenement housing and then by envisioning entirely different places – Garden Cities and Towers in the Park – and counting on these new forms to improve residents’ well-being and neighborhoods’ quality of life. Many of today’s suburbs and redeveloped areas in cities conform with these visions, but have generated significant criticism from the more recent generations of planners and urban designers – for being impersonal, dysfunctional, and unwalkable. Start your 3-page paper by summarizing our class material that described this, and then pick a neighborhood of your choice (it can be the place where you grew up or a favorite place you visited) to serve as a case study demonstrating the pros and cons of these different approaches to urban design. You must include at least four (4) citations from course readings. (Feel free to include images of your case study.) For the first part, Please use these sources: 1. The Death and Life of Great American Cities, pages 8-13 and 37-41 and 65-71 (Jacobs) or 1a. Seeing Like a State (Chapter 4) Pgs 16 - 24 (Summarizes the text above) 2. How Planning and Zoning Contribute to Inequitable Development, Neighborhood Health, and Environmental Injustice For the second part: Please look to these sources for help.
