Using this document as the primary source, each student will write a short paper (3-4 pages). Points Possible: 100 Instructions: I. Discuss the author of the document -- his or her background II. Highlights of document (direct quotes) -- cite key passages -- why important? II. Explanation of significance -- how is the document significant to its time and later U.S. history? How does the document relate to events of the present time? IV. Answer questions at the end of the document. Your sources will be the document itself, the introduction to the document that precedes it, and at least one (or more) on-line sources that you consult for biographical information or historical context. You must include a works cited page (or bibliography).
