Is the criminal justice system the best way to manage extremism? In responding to this question, think critically about what we have covered this week in terms of the various options on the table for policymakers to prevent, respond to, and interdict terrorism. Consider the following questions: Why might the criminal justice system be better at managing extremism than some of the alternatives we discussed? (e.g. what are the pros here?) Why might the criminal justice system be worse at managing extremism than some of the alternatives we discussed? (e.g. what are the cons here?) Do you think the CJS, on balance, is a better or worse vehicle for dealing with extremism in America? Make sure you support your argument. Strong responses will begin with a robust thesis statement (ex: I do/do not believe the criminal justice system is the best way to manage extremism in America). From there, unpack your reasoning by going over the strengths and weaknesses of this approach, in relation to the various options that are out there (e.g. review lectures notes). Once you post, please provide at least 1 critique of a fellow peer who takes a different position than you. Critiques must be substantive (e.g. not surface-level statements about how much you "liked" their post and how it made you think "hard). Be thorough, but respectful and to the point. Provide examples and evidence when necessary. Expectations These are short exercises designed to get students to think critically about an important topic or salient political issue that week. It is expected that 2-3 paragraphs are provided in response to each prompt. Strong answers are concise and provide evidence where necessary. There are no "right" and "wrong" answers per se, but students should avoid merely providing their unfiltered opinion. Instead, demonstrate that you have critically interrogated the question by providing a robust, organized, and well supported respponse; almost like a mini-argument. Please avoid writing like you are on Twitter- these need to be edited and have to make sense to the reader
