Purpose: This self-reflective essay should demonstrate how multiple aspects of an adolescent’s life combine to have a significant impact on their overall development of identity (Chapter 8). Analyzing your own experience of adolescence should help you to explore the roles that family, peers, community, media, and others, have had on your identity development. The important role of achievement motivation (Chapter 12) should also be considered. Instructions: Briefly describe your identity. Consider which aspects of your sense of self are the most important to you. Discuss which of these characteristics of your identity may have developed during your adolescence. Do you remember specific events that contributed to the development of those beliefs, ideals, etc. that formed that aspect of your identity? Analyze the role of family, peers, community, media, and others that were influential in the development of your identity (as you described above). Identify at least two major contributors to your development and describe their influence. Be sure to consider how each of the aspects of your identity may have been shaped by your adolescent experiences. Explore the role of achievement motivation and autonomy in the development of your sense of identity. Consider how it may have impacted you as an adolescent and how it may continue to do so in the present day. Conclude the essay with any other aspects of adolescence which you think may be influential in the development of identity. Describe at least three other aspects that you find most influential to identity development in adolescence. Some examples might include sexuality, religion, substance use, risk taking or politics. ONCE YOU HAVE MESSAGED ME, WE WILL GO INTO A BIT MORE DEPTH ABOUT ME AND WHO I AM. Reminders: Three scholarly resources (one can be the textbook) should be used to support factual information in the essay. APA formatting is required for the essay. Please use in-text citations and provide a reference page. Use of first person (speaking about yourself as “I”) is acceptable in a self-reflection essay. Please maintain a formal academic tone.
