Be sure to include the minimum number of artworks per essay and include as much historical and artistic detail as possible for maximum points! Question 1. Do artworks and architecture created for monotheistic religions display a dependence on earlier polytheistic artistic traditions, or a deliberate shift away from these earlier styles? In your essay, discuss the transition from the worship of multiple gods in ancient Rome and Northern Europe to monotheistic worship through the analysis of architecture, sculpture, mosaic, stained glass, metalwork, and/or painting. Discuss at least five key images related to organized religion. Topics to be addressed may include the depiction of the human body, the development of the Christian church and Islamic mosque, and issues of syncretism and hybridity in art Question 3. Was the medieval period an era of artistic decline, or an era of artistic flourishing? Select a side, and compose a convincing argument by comparing at least two key works of Roman Art from the Early or High Empire to at least three key works from a medieval period. Compare the artistic and engineering accomplishments of the Roman Empire and the artistic and engineering accomplishments of the medieval period. Address why the medieval period has often been characterized as a period of decline even if you do not agree with this assessment.
