Write essays on each of the two topics! NOTE: I am not concerned with word count. I am looking for essays that are thorough, thoughtful and demonstrate your ability to describe movement and discern cultural beliefs and aesthetics which influence choreography. Due 4/27/2022. TOPIC 1 Watch Michel Fokine's original "Dying Swan" performed by Anna Pavlova and Lil' Buck's present-day interpretation. Watch contemporary Ballet/African dancer Dada Masilo's "Odette" solo from her choreography "Swan Lake" and compare to the classical "Odette" solo from the original production of "Swan Lake" choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. Notice and describe the changing aesthetic from choreography by Petipa (whose work represented a classical tradition of beauty and technical refinement)...to that of early 20th century ballet choreographer Fokine (who believed that more importantly than satisfying the eye, dance should "penetrate the soul" ... should appeal to "the emotions and the imagination"). Then bring your discussion on to the aesthetics of present day artists Basilo and Lil' Buck. Describe each of the 4 performances and discuss how each version reflects the world (culture, aesthetic, social dynamics) in which it was created. WATCH THE FOLLOWING VIDEO CLIPS: 1. Search YouTube for the "Odette solo from the classical ballet Swan Lake" 2. Search for: Anna Pavlova performing "The Swan" by Fokine. (Also referred to as "Dying Swan") 3. http://youtu.be/9wYcUAcXDyg The Odette solo from Dada Masilo's "Swan Lake", performed Feb. 3, 2012 4. Watch interviews and excerpts from their work in our online library or research on your own. What beliefs underlie their personal aesthetics? What ideas shape their choreography? Describe and discuss the dance excerpts that you view. Describe and discuss each choreographer’s aesthetic. Choreographers for Final Exam.docx Download Choreographers for Final Exam.docx
