Final Paper: Research Report Length: 8-9 pages Due: Tuesday 5/17 (or before) (minimum 2,000 words) The final research report paper topic has 3 parts: Define, describe and discuss a community (of your choice) that you belong to and wish to write about. You can write about the people who are in this community, their habits, behaviors, beliefs; the connections within the group, activities, connection to others outside the group and many more possible things. These are some ideas. Identify a problem this community faces. This could be a big problem or a smaller one. It can be for example, how the community is perceived by others, (e.g., stereotype or being misunderstood) or problems with meeting together, connecting, time, having to give up other things, safety, money/economic issues, and many more possibilities Propose a solution to help solve the problem. You have all brainstormed some great examples of communities! What you want to think about when you choose one for this research report: Pick one that you are inspired to write about, and that you are able to write enough about. Some other factors that may help you decide: You will need 2 written/informational sources that you find on your own (at least). These can be various informational sources, including sources for background, history, statistics etc. You will need to incorporate 1-2 personal interview sources. That is, you will be asked to interview at least one member of the community (besides yourself) and refer to the information/ideas/opinions they provide. You can interview 2 people if you wish. You can refer to anything from either of the 2 articles we looked at together about community. (These would be extra sources) You can incorporate small amounts of first person, but this paper must remain a report, not a personal narrative, so be careful. The use of all these sources will help you to write the paper and complete 3 parts of the report. The reference for “Writing a Report” in our textbook are pages 252-256. For a quick checklist, these are the “Characteristic Features” for writing a report on page 257: A topic carefully focused for a specific audience (a few classmates may be part of the community you chose, but many will not, so that is our audience.) Definitions of key terms Trustworthy information Appropriate organization and design (Having the 3 defined parts will help most people organize here, though there may be some fusion of the parts, depending on your style.) A confident, informative tone Some of the procedures for this paper will be a little different from the past 2 assignments These are the due dates for the coming weeks: By Monday 4/25 Post a 3-part summary of plan for paper & projected sources on DB. This should be a small description for each section (community, problem, solution). Mention what types of sources you plan to use, even if they are not completely finalized this week. A few sentences or a small paragraph for each 3 is enough, but be clear. I will tell you if I think the topic pick could be problematic in any way-- too general, too vague, too complex/confusing/unclear etc. as stated. I want you to get your topic fine-tuned so the paper will go smoothly. I definitely invite your ideas and creativity, and most topics are fine or get worked out well. Also, write a brief response to 2 other posts in your group. This can be very helpful. If I feel your topic needs some adjustment I will email you individually. Also, I allow a maximum of two people on the same topic, so check posts before you select your community. If two people are doing the same topic please pick something else. Week beginning 4/27: Post some of 1st section of paper on DB (250-500 words). Week beginning 5/4: Post some of 2nd section of paper on small group DB (250-500 words). Week beginning 5/11: Post some of of 3rd section of paper on small group DB (250-500 words). Class 5/16 We will share some thoughts and reflections on what has been learned in doing this paper, based on your own work and your experiencing others’ work . This will be informal; it may help to tweak any last minute items in your paper. By 5/17 Final paper is due (emailed to me) by this date (or before). A few important notes: The weekly classwork will consist of doing your post on time for the week, and responding. That way, one DB will be active each week for each part of the paper. I suggest that you copy and paste your text that you post on the DBs since the length is moderate, at least 250 words. Please do not do very short posts under the minimum of 250 words; these assignments are meant to engage you in working on each part of the paper and that will make your life easier as you work through this paper. I will give some guidelines to consider for critique/comment each week for each section of the paper..Even though the above schedule outlines all the work till the end of the semester, I will still post each week in the weekly folder what the DB post is (a reminder) and some guidelines for that post. Peer review and self-review will not be formal. Students can still help each other in comments. I will also comment (mostly through email) from time to time to individual students. I will encourage all of you to meet with me at least once to discuss the progress of your paper with me, especially to troubleshoot any issues if you encounter them. *Please remember that you still need to fulfill the page requirement for the final paper, even though your posts for each section may not be completely finished when you post them on DB each week, you will still tweak and perfect each section along the way. Doing these weekly posts will help get you through writing this paper over the coming weeks. I intend that to be helpful. Remember this is an academic paper so all MLA criteria are required, including in-text citations and a works cited page for the final paper.
