PLEASE WRITE PERSONAL RESPONSES TO THE FOLLOWING TWO DISCUSSION POSTS: 1. The process of adaptation to aging is one that can be drawn out into about 3 areas or theories. The first is the disengagement theory which essentially says that people decrease their social interactions with age and withdraw. Additionally, their physical strength and health begins to decline at this stage as well. The opposite of this theory is the activity theory, which states that increased activity later in life is good for health and strength and can encourage physical activity. Finding ways to stay active and engaged later in life is so incredibly important. Finally, the continuity theory promotes patterns and routines throughout the life span. Keeping to a steady routine that can be relied on is another great way to keep engaged and healthy both physically and mentally. I know that it can be so difficult for an aging adult to keep high self-esteem as they get older. The reality is, that they are going through changes and some of them are negative. It is important to be engaged and connected with others as you age, meaning friends or family or through group activities. Being home alone and bored is not good for anyone, no matter what their age is. I also think that older adults should be getting more involved with media and social media as they age as another way of keeping connected. Isolation is one of the main reasons why health declines in older age, so if we combat that we are on the right track. 2. The disengagement theory stipulates that the onset of old age causes a two-sided withdrawal where the aging person withdraws from society and the society withdraws from the aging person. Activity theory suggests that elderly individuals are happiest when they can engage in social interactions (Novak, 2018). These interactions act as a replacement for what is lost after retirement, for example, a job. On the other hand, continuity theory stipulates that older adults will likely try to maintain their life and experiences when they were younger. The only difference is that such incidents will be adapted to fit the circumstances of old age (Novak, 2018; Mager, 2022). For instance, an older adult may continue with daily exercise but spend less time and engage in less strenuous activities. I feel that aging adults face an environment that significantly reinforces the reduction of self-esteem. For instance, most lose the ability to carry out essential activities by themselves. Additionally, some medical conditions tend to develop at this age. The factors surrounding old age may overwhelm individuals and make them prone to low self-esteem. Following are examples of how older adults can maintain self-esteem as they age. The first way is to maintain strong bonds with friends and family members (Hartley et al., 2018). The second way is eating healthy diets and maintaining a relatively active lifestyle. The third way is to ensure good hygiene as it boosts personal confidence.
