The Research Paper is worth 100 points and is 20% of your grade. Below you will find the instructions for the paper. C. Wright Mills (1959) asserted that sociological imagination is a way for people to understand how history is embedded in their lives, that is "neither the life of an individual nor the history of a society can be understood without understanding both." Mills emphasized the need for people to connect their lives to history and to turn “personal problems into social issues" because historical events have helped shape our contemporary society and the lives of every living person. However, Mills warned that when a person gains insight into their life’s intersection with history, this discovery is “in many ways is a terrible lesson, in many ways a magnificent one.” Based on this discovery, each person can choose to perpetuate history or become an active agent to create social change. When considering or creating social change, we must first critically examine the social issue at hand. It's very likely that many social issues in relation to race and ethnicity have already been examined and researched at length, so your goal for this research paper is to gather information on what has been done and come up with a research question that either fills in the gaps or adds insights to existing research. Prepare Choose a social issue or concept that you learned from this class, for example, whiteness, colorblindness, intersectionality, race and education, the prison industrial complex, race and housing, etc. Write In this paper, you will make an objective argument about your topic using credible sources, and design a research study to better understand the social problem. Here are the sections that you must have in your paper. Introduction and Research Question For background information, use a non-academic source to introduce the social issue or concept you chose. Then state the research question or problem to be solved. Utilize the research paper outline. Theoretical Framework Choose a sociological perspective and use it to analyze the issue. Here are core sociological perspectives that you can use but are not limited to them. Conflict theory- inequalities are created based on the competition for scarce resources, and race is used as a category to justify social inequalities Feminist theory- race does not stand alone, it also intersects with gender and other identities to double-disadvantaged an individual or a group (e.g., women of color, LGBTQIA+ person of color, etc.) Critical race theory- racial inequalities are embedded in institutions (knowingly and unknowingly) that perpetuate social inequalities Functionalist theory- racial and ethnic categories serve a purpose in the functioning of society Symbolic Interactionism- meanings are attached to race and ethnicity, and these meanings also inform social interactions Literature Review A review of previous research and theory, What has been done or said about your topic? Must include at least one academic source here (utilize your annotated bibliography). Methodology How will you study the topic? What methods will you to collect data? What kind of data will you collect? Conclusion Tie the previous sections back to the research question. Also, describe 3 solutions that may reduce, eliminate, or educate others about this social issue.
