You will write a 6-7 page rhetorical analysis of ONE of the major in-class articles below in which you evaluate and focus on a particular question that you identify and that will be expressed in your thesis question. PAGE LENGTH DOES NOT INCLUDE WORKS CITED PAGE You will use as a guide the rhetorical analysis handout, your journals which asked rhetorical analysis questions, and the outline provided You will utilize FIVE additional sources per the two options below one additional in class source (a full article, not a video, etc.) and THREE sources you found through research in the library database and that credible and scholarly Paintings, sculptures, videos, dance, music are IN ADDITION TO THE SOURCES ABOVE, not "researched sources" You will utilize you additional sources to serve to verify or support a claim in the original article, illustrate a claim, refute a claim, or add needed information for claims that require more in order to be convincing, or will serve other roles that you identify. Please do not simply find articles that “agree.” You have to have a reason for offering them as responses to your thesis question. Papers that are nothing but four summaries will be a failing paper. Your paper will include an ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY that is NOT part of the page count. Use the structure of the Research Exercise 1 to organize your sources Look at the sample introductory paragraphs and the outline that goes with it Annotated Bibliography: Two handouts on CANVAS offer samples, instructions and brainstorm questions. All of your researched sources, as the two in your Research Exercise, support your thesis question and provide a comparison, a counter argument, a refutation, or other position, but they may not all just “agree.” There’s no point to writing a paper where all the sources agree. Do not write a political science paper with no reference to the arts) “Wabi Sabi Aesthetics” thesis/Focused Topic This assignment will give you practice in evaluating sources from the standpoint of their relevance to a focused topic that you identify from common themes and questions that unite the above articles and that we discussed in class. Some of the themes and questions that we encountered repeatedly include, but are not limited to: relationship of language and visual image: comparison, limits, issues of communication purpose of communication through visual images and other arts nature of communication of feelings, emotions and experiences of the artist to the viewer the basic question, ‘what is art?’ the moral role of art in society the political role of art in society relationship of art to society’s needs for change relationship of art in maintaining a social and political status quo or to challenging the status quo relationship of art to culture the role of the artist in relationship to society art as reality, or higher reality Your additional perspectives! Thesis: Your thesis will pose a question regarding the above or other topics, and you will utilize your in-class source to demonstrate how the question is answered by that particular writer. You will utilize any of the rhetorical analysis questions that are attached to your journal questions and additional questions in the handout of compilations of rhetorical analysis strategies. Your journal questions should be a place where you start to find what question is of greatest interest to you. You must write a rhetorical analysis paper. You will utilize rhetorical analysis as a technique in evaluating your source and then, filling in the gaps, weaknesses, supporting the strengths, through your researched sources. Your TWO researched sources, might for example, provide expert opinion for your own analysis open a new perspective important for your analysis counter your author’s claims and open up a new perspective add additional perspectives to your thesis/focus topic that help to illuminate your evaluation of your in-class source Your two researched sources should NOT just “agree.” A paper that just shows how three authors agree is not really worth doing. Use your own critical thinking as a starting point and trust your creative ideas and responses! Purpose: Your goal and purpose as a writer is that you provide your reader with an analysis of one article’s approach to a topic and to integrate researched sources as EITHER support for your analysis OR as a counter argument supporting your criticism OR a little of both. Your reader should understand not only the topic being discussed, but how the articles you chose to analyze contribute and also fail to contribute to the topic you identify. This skill is critical to your eventual writing of a much longer research paper not only in practicing identifying and evaluating sources, but also in incorporating your sources into your own argument. You will also get practice researching sources so that you feel more confident when we work on the final research paper.
