You are required to write an argumentative essay that discusses both citizen and police perspectives on officer-involved shootings. These arguments will require you to demonstrate your ability to support each side with relevant research and case law. This argumentative essay will be on Joshua Barre, a 29-year-old black man armed with a knife, was shocked with a stun gun and shot on June 9, 2017, in a store in Tulsa, Okla. Research media accounts of the incident, as well as relevant research and court decisions that pertain to police shootings. You will then use these sources to write a short 4-5 page paper that explains the issue, why it is controversial, and what your opinion on the incident is. This assignment is designed to allow you to examine these controversial police issues and gain experience developing an argument. There are no right or wrong arguments on the shooting, instead you will be graded on your ability to write in support of their argument and use outside sources to justify their argument. You must cite at least one academic journal article on police shootings or use of force, and one court case that supports their opinion. The court case can be from a State Supreme Court or the Supreme Court of the United States. The academic article and court case must be used to inform your arguments. APA formatting is REQUIRED because this is the format used in the field of Criminal Justice. You should follow the APA guidelines detailed at Purdue Owl APA (https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ ). I will provide my class details for the essay upon hiring.
