Purpose: This week’s discussion will give you practice at articulating your views about technology, a topic about which it is sometimes taboo to express any reservations. You will practice being vulnerable by sharing struggles you have with it, and you will practice receiving the vulnerability of others by responding to your classmates. Post: This week you read part of a book about technology that is targeted at families but is relevant for all Christians, and you also listened in on a video conversation between two Christians who were talking about how this works within their own families. As you learned in the introductory video, the author began the book by inviting you to think about how technology affects your character development, your use of space in your living quarters, and the ways you structure your time. Then, you read the central five chapters of the book, in which the author takes up five specific application topics: how this conversation is relevant for night-/bedtime, for raising children, for dealing with boredom, for car-time and commuting, and for sex and relationships. For your post, using a minimum of 300 words, you will post a personal reflection that interacts with your reading in Crouch’s book, that reflects your understanding of the video conversation with Dr. Ries, and that is designed to help someone with a family to consider Crouch’s suggestions. Specifically, you will do the following: First, imagine a situation in which a person who has a family comes to you to talk about the struggles they are having with technology and their children. This person might be a family member, a neighbor, a co-worker, a friend from church, etc. Then, write a couple of sentences in which you describe the scenario you imagine: your relationship with the other person, the age(s) of their child(ren), and then the kinds of struggles that they are having. (Feel free to do a little research if you aren’t sure about typical struggles these days with kids of a particular age group!) Finally, describe TWO elements from your reading in The Tech-Wise Family, and ONE point of discussion from the video conversation with Dr. Ries, that you would want to share with that other person. Your comments might concern specific details from the book and/or the video, or they might be more global concepts, for example, the topics of whole chapters. As always, make sure that you are showing your learning by your post – and this time, show your imagination in terms of how this material might apply to someone’s everyday life.
