Step 1: Get outside. Walk, drive, start in your neighborhood and venture out from there. -locate an example of each of the specified terms or ideas on the EXTERIOR of a building or architectural form. Photo #1:“classical” inspiration • This is something that looks like it could have come off of a building from Ancient Greece or Rome. It’s the details that matter here. If it’s a column, what kind of capital does it have? Have you ever seen any metopes in domestic architecture? My neighborhood is weirdly full of them in the lintel above the front door. Photo #2: a symmetrical component in an asymmetrical building • Here you are looking for a building that is NOT symmetrical but which has a symmetrical component. Photo #3: some sort of bay or module that repeats, creating an “incident”/”interval” in the rhythm of a building  Look for repeating patterns, like a string of windows or a decorative panel. Try to describe the rhythm. Photo #4: industrial materials used as a design element  NOT industrial materials that are necessary for the operation of the building, like the fire standpipes on the exterior of a building or chrome hinges or handles on doors  You are looking for industrial materials, like steel panels or cabling or glass block or concrete used as part of the overall decoration of the building Photo #5: natural materials used as a design element where the emphasis is on showing off the natural material by contrasting it with an industrial material  Wood on the top of a metal railing is a good example, or stone used around the base of a building made of concrete Step 2: Document your discoveries Take a photograph of each item, with yourself in each photo. You may end up having to take two photographs—one of the design element, and one with you in front of the building as a whole Step 3: Show me what you’ve found and explain it to me. Put your photographs into a little 5 slide Powerpoint with one photograph and explanation on each slide. (You can also do this in a Word document if Powerpoint is not accessible to you.)  Label each photograph with the specified term or idea at the top.  Briefly explain how that term or idea is made visible in each choice. (50-100 words EACH)
